TxSWANA honors private and public firms throughout the state that achieve and maintain excellent safety records with a safety award. This recognition is designed to stimulate interest in accident prevention and to promote safety in the work place and to provide an incentive to employers and employees to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
In honor of the first chairperson of the S.M.A.R.T. (Safety Management and Resource Team) committee, and longtime safety devotee, this award will henceforth be named the Jimmy Huff Safety Award. While serving as the Solid Waste Services Safety Manager for the City of Austin, Jimmy distinguished himself not only by his commitment to safety for his employees, but also to the members of TxSWANA by his presentations at the annual conferences and his leadership on the chapter's safety committee. Jimmy's initial leadership provided the foundation for this team of safety professionals that now offers a variety of safety resources to the TxSWANA membership.
There were many cities vying for the first annual Jimmy Huff Safety Award, and all had excellent safety records. Applications were received from the cities of Plano, El Paso, Perryton, Denton, Grand Prairie, Austin, Beaumont, Dallas, Mesquite, and Houston. When it was all said and done, the 2004 honor went to the City of Mesquite. Ron Capehart, Manager of Solid Waste Division, accepted the award on the city's behalf at the TxSWANA Annual Conference held in Brownsville, Texas, March 29-31, 2004.
Congratulations to the City of Mesquite for being the first recipient of the distinguished Jimmy Huff Safety Award and for its commitment to safety in the solid waste industry.
