July 2006 Message from the President

by Mary Nix

Howdy, folks !!

(That's my Big Tex imitation … try to fill in the deep voice for me, please.)  Well, it was great to see so many of you for the TxSWANA Annual Conference and the TxSWANA Road-E-O - both in June.  We had over 400 attending the conference - an event that combined both technical advancements in solid waste with some Big D fun times.  Even Kinky (Friedman - a luncheon speaker) said it was so much fun he'd come back next year - governor or not !

And over 100 of our fine operators, mechanics, and drivers participated in the Road-E-O.  Congrats to our many winners.  Hope you first-place winners do just as well in Arizona next month.

We recognized two past presidents at the conference's closing luncheon - Vance Kemler and Charles Ross.  The city of Denton accepted the Jimmy Huff Safety Award for most improved safety record of the participating cities.  And we welcomed several new TxSWANA Board members:  Ken Anthony from the city of Waco, Pete Caler from the city of College Station, and Holly Holder of Parkhill, Smith and Cooper, representing members from west Texas.

What else have we done for you lately?

Well, first of all, the TxSWANA scholarships are to be awarded later this month - I'll have an update for you in the next newsletter.  Secondly, the 330 rules have finally passed Commission approval - with substantially less negative impact and, in fact, some positive results, for all of us - in large part due to the continual involvement of your Board members with the TCEQ staff and the Commissioners.  And thirdly, we're actively planning our legislative program for the 2007 session.

How else can we help you?

Offer your feedback - call me any time - or any of us on the Board.  We're here for you - let us know what you need.
